The Migration Calving Season in the Ndutu area, located in the southern Serengeti, is one of nature’s most spectacular events. This period typically occurs from late January to early March, when hundreds of thousands of wildebeest, along with zebras and gazelles, gather in Ndutu to give birth to their calves. The southern Serengeti’s vast, nutrient-rich grasslands provide the perfect environment for calving, with fresh green grass offering essential nutrients for the newborns.

During this time, visitors can witness the dramatic spectacle of over 500,000 wildebeest giving birth within a short span of weeks. The sight of these newborn calves taking their first steps is breathtaking, while predators, such as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas, are never far behind, attracted by the abundance of vulnerable young animals. This makes for exciting game viewing, as you can see the delicate balance of life and death play out in real-time.

Apart from the incredible wildlife spectacle, the Ndutu area itself is known for its beautiful landscapes, including the seasonal Lake Ndutu, which attracts a variety of birdlife. Now, at over 19 kilometres wide, Ngorongoro Crater is filled with great areas of acacia forest, hippo filled swamps and open grasslands. These different habitats contain over 30,000 animals – including elephants, warthogs, flamingoes, magnificent birdlife, the rare black rhinoceros and all the predatory cats. The Maasai can also be seen grazing their cattle alongside the buffalo and wildebeest.
